Blog Float Left Feature

Beginning this month, Float Left will be launching a new campaign titled Float Left Features, with each “feature” spotlighting a member of the Float Left team. As a kick-off for our first-ever Float Left Feature, we will be spotlighting Nowele Rechka. Nowele is a part of the Engineering team as a Senior Software Engineer, and has been an integral part of launching various applications such as CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Redbull, Fox, AMC, Crackle, and Eggcentric. Check out our Q&A from our first Float Left Feature, Nowele Rechka.

What brought you to Float Left?

I interviewed with Float Left 1 month prior to graduating college at FGCU. I was excited to start working and gaining real experience. I also had never worked in Brightscript before, which is the language I code in for Roku. This was completely new for me, since I had learned different languages in school. I 100% learned Brightscript on the job!

You mentioned that you attended FGCU. Did they have a large program there for Computer Science and Software Engineering?

Yes, that is correct. I attended FGCU, because I liked the appeal of going to a smaller school. At the time, the FGCU’s computer program was very small. I was actually part of the first class to graduate, and was also 1 of 3 females within the graduating class.

What an exciting experience to be a part of! Speaking of exciting experiences, tell me about some of the projects that you have worked on here at Float Left.

It’s been great to learn Brightscript, and work with high-profile clients such as Redbull, NBC Sports and Crackle. One of the first apps I actually worked on was the CBS Sports app. This was a live scene-graph project, where a custom SDK was built for Roku. What was most exciting about this, was that they live streamed Super Bowl L (50) via this app, and it went off without a hitch! Definitely one of my most favorite accomplishments.

That is definitely an accomplishment! Aside from building apps, what else do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I really enjoy practicing Tae Kwon Do. In Tae Kwon Do, they teach you about the 5 Tenets: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit. I find this to be applicable not only in my daily life, but also as a Software Engineer where Tenets such as Courtesy and Perseverance become very useful.

Lastly, through your experience of working at Float Left for the past 2 years, what would you say you have enjoyed the most.

It’s been amazing to see how much has changed. Not only within my skill set in becoming a better architect, but also working with various teams and other engineers in developing new and exciting applications and builds more efficiently, especially with our Flicast product.
